History was made yesterday as LTC eSports became the first team to turn professional backed by a crypto non-profit, the Litecoin Foundation. The LTC eSports team will now play in the APEX Pro League, setting their sights on taking on the ALGS (Apex Legends Global Series) tournament in June.
“The eSports space provides an incredible opportunity to introduce Litecoin to a new generation. With adoption as a primary objective of the Litecoin Foundation, sponsoring LTC eSports made a lot of sense! We’re extremely pleased to see the young team turn pro!” - Charlie Lee, creator of Litecoin.
Awareness and adoption have been core pillars of the Litecoin Foundation’s marketing efforts since the organization’s inception in 2017. In the past, the Litecoin Foundation has partnered with NFL team Miami Dolphins, was the official cryptocurrency partner of UFC 232 and co-sponsored NASCAR driver, Landon Cassill. The sponsorship of LTC eSports marks a concerted effort by the Litecoin Foundation to expand awareness and adoption of Litecoin among the billions who game globally.
Through LTC eSports, Litecoin will be exposed to millions of viewers globally. ‘Esports Charts’ reported that the 2022 ALGS Championship had 632,000 concurrent viewers, though - if the 27% bump in views of this year’s Playoffs is anything to go by - the streaming numbers will no doubt be much higher.
The timing for Litecoin’s presence in gaming - and APEX Legends in particular - is especially exciting. Research and insights platform, Cloudwards, reported that in 2022 the valuation of the global gaming market had eclipsed US$196b. Not a surprise given that 81% of Gen Z and 77% of Millennials worldwide were deemed frequent online gamers. With APEX Legends - the game in which LTC eSports is now competing professionally - seeing 413,600+ players in January 2023 alone (eSports Charts).
With participation and viewing of eSports growing year-on-year among Gen Z, the Litecoin Foundation’s sponsorship of the LTC eSports team positions Litecoin well to see a boom in awareness.
